Wk15 – Art Experience – Finger Painting

When i first started it felt like it was going to be hard as I did not what i wanted to do. I started off with my initials in the middle of the paper and hope i would get ideas from here. But as i went on, i just told myself “Fuck it” and got dirty. I put my three colors on each finger, blue, red, and brown and started attacking the paper. I did soft and hard strokes with my fingers and i started to enjoy my final product. The messier I got the more the project felt more enjoying and relaxing. It really made me forget about any finals i have been worrying about. It really cleared my head as i only focused on this one thing. It started off as something i really did not cared about to something that I was proud about.

About the Artist

This week’s visit to the art galleries were different as the holiday art sale was going on. I was able to meet Sam Mederios who is currently a senior at CSULB. He is majoring in Sculpture and will be graduating next semester.

Formal Analysis

This gallery was different from the past visits since there was not one certain theme, rather than different items from different students who made these pieces. For Sam’s piece, he had made a chess piece using wood, resin, and acrylic. The chess box looked really high detailed and finish, it did not look cheaply made. One side of the chess pieces are black, and the other side were grey toned color. The chess board was a brown, wooden color.

Content Analysis

He stated that the chess piece took him ten days to complete, as making each detail took a long time. He stated making a chess set will be something that will show his abilities with wood work. The chess pieces really showed his artistic skills by showcasing all details and nice cuts with the wood.

Synthesis/My Experience

I enjoyed Sam’s chess piece a lot, it fascinated me to see a student was able to create this thing with such great detail. I would have liked to see him have his own gallery where he would have more items on display and see more work. His work is something I could see myself purchasing to have in my home.

Wk14 – Art Experience – Instagram

This week art experience we used Instagram to post pictures through out the day and we used the hashtag #art110f16 so we could see the pictures everyone in our class posted. I do use instagram but I made a second account for this activity as I posted more random pictures than what I usually post. I enjoyed this activity as I was able to see what everyone posts and how similar our post were. I saw some of the same things like the typical food post, selfies, as well as the typical sunset or sunrise post. I was not surprised with the other pictures I saw from the other classmates. There was a connection, or community of some sort when you see all the pictures. It really showed how we tend to post the same type of pictures even though we are different people.

Wk12 – Artist Conversation -Connor O’Brien

Artist: Connor O’Brien

Exhibition: Mentia

Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Dr. Maxine Merlino Gallery

About the Artist

On this week’s visit to the art galleries, I had the pleasure of meeting Connor O’Brien. Connor is currently a senior at CSULB and is pursuing for the BFA in Photography. He is from a close by city called Los Alamitos where he lives at currently. He stated that he has always been amused by cameras as a kid, as he has been able to go outside and capture different moments.

Formal Analysis

When you walk into the exhibit all the walls are white, and there is a video playing. The exhibit light is dimmed so you could focus on the film The video is about five minutes long and it showcases a young man, helping an older man with his everyday activities as changing and being fed. There was no dialogue in the video but there is an instrumental that is going on through the video and it definitely sets the mood of the video.

Content Analysis

The exhibit, Mentia, it shows cases the artist Connor and him taking care of his father who is suffering from dementia. You see him as he helps his father by feeding him, preparing him to shower and shower him. He also assists him in changing and with his daily routines that are needed to go on with his day. Connor stated that his father was only diagnosed for six years but his father had shown symptoms of dementia for fifteen years. He stated how his brother and his mother alternate on helping out with his father. He stated he hoped with his exhibition he would bring awareness to dementia.

Synthesis/My Experience

Connor’s exhibit was one I really enjoyed and it really caught my attention. I walked into the exhibit and felt the connection Connor has with his father. It made me wonder how much his life has changed because of this and the way he goes on with his life knowing his dad is suffering with this. It made me realize how we take for granted the little things in life as being up to get up, bathe ourselves and change our own clothes. The moments where you see his father smile in the video did make me feel good, seeing that he was suffering from this disease he was still able to smile.

Wk11 – Artist Conversation – Kyle Kruse

About the Artist

This week’s visit to the art galleries, I had the pleasure of meeting the artist Kyle Kruse. He is currently an undergraduate student at CSULB School of Art’s Printmaking Program. Growing up he moved a lot, he stated of not staying in the same place for more than a year. He currently has been in Long Beach for 6 years, and has plans of moving after graduating from school.

Formal Analysis

Kyle’s exhibit consisted of many things including mask sculptures, wooden engravings and films. The exhibit is very dark as there is a black curtain before walking in. The light is very dim, makes hard to see certain things. There is dirt/mud all over the floor which you are able to feel once you walk in. There are three stands with a wooden mask is sitting on top of a stand. Then there are three wooden engravings on the wall behind the masks. On the other end of the exhibit is where there is a screen that is playing the film.

Content Analysis

The exhibit is based on Greek mythology, where each head represents Prometheus, Janus, and Sisyphus. Each piece is a representation of the character’s stories and what these characters have done. The large space between the wooden pieces and the film is a representation of void, the void we all stand in. He stated that the experience you get from the exhibit varies by the viewer and how they grew up and what they have encountered.

Synthesis/My Experience

The way he had the exhibit set up and the details on his sculptures were amazing. The pieces are well done and I enjoyed the craftsmanship. The feeling of scary and creepy you get when you walk in was perfect and he was able to execute this good. When it comes to the overall meaning behind the exhibit was not really good to me. I did not understand it that much and I think I’m not that big of a fan of Greek methodology to understand it.

Wk 11 – Classmate Conversation – Nathan Davalos & Gabriel Gonzalez

This week in class I had the pleasure off meeting two classmates, Nathan Davalos & Gabriel Gonzalez. After having small talk of getting to know each other and realizing how fast this semester has gone by, we started discussing the question of the week. We all had the same views on fan art as we did not have a positive or negative view on it. Celebrities should appreciate fans that devote quality time and effort on these pieces. There is also certain art where they do mimic celebrities so the celebrities sometime have a higher guard when it comes to art depicting them.

Wk 10 – Art Experience – Fiber Art Social Network

  1. When it comes to a social network, I think more of the friends I have online than the ones in real life. I don’t consider it for my real life friends as I do not consider them as a network.
  2. The nunbar number does make sense to me as I believe there is no way to have that many friends and have the same type of close meaningful relationships. Even 150 I believe is a high number, especially over time as people grow up and become more busy it is hard to have the same meaningful relationships with everyone.
  3. When you have friends on Facebook in the thousands, it means nothing at all. It just means you have more people following your daily posts and seeing what you do. It does not mean they know who you really are.
  4. The Art 110 social network and the social network I created did not surprised me as they were all people I know in my real life or the people I meant these past few weeks in class.
  5. In my life I want to have close relationships with around 50 people in my whole life. That includes my family, friends at work, and in general. I have a big family and I want to make sure I stay close to them forever and any other people I meet I just want to make sure to have a few more close friends.
  6. The extra friends I have on these platforms have never had any benefits on me. I have never received anything, or has anything ever come about for having these extra friends who are not close.
